From next year, the fonts in Ford’s Edge and Explorer SUV models will be some 40% larger as well as thicker. The reason? Baby Boomers have poor eyesight. No, really, Ford’s done a study and everything. The bigger fonts will extend to interior display screens control and A/C controls, and will gradually be rolled out onto other models in the Ford range in coming years.
In a statement on their website, Ford expressed its desire to make it, “easier for people of all ages, particularly aging Baby Boomers, to read display fonts.” Ah, like the little boy or girl who flat-out tells his grandparents that they’re old and wrinkly, Ford has snagged upon that babying / slow and loud way anyone under the age of 30 speak to anyone over the age of 50:

Revised McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Racer to Debut at Goodwood

Drunk, Asleep and Driving a Car? The Curious Case of Dr. Donald Clegg


Donald Clegg, a 59-year old doctor from Prestwich in the UK was four times over the legal limit when he crashed his Vauxhall Zafira into a row of parked cars. He was also sleepwalking at the time and attired in a dressing gown and slippers…
Dr. Clegg pleaded guilty to driving over the limit “without due care and attention” and was sentenced to a minimum 12 month driving ban, a fine of £650 and was ordered to pay £315 in court fees and charges. The court rejected that Dr. Clegg’s sentence should be suspended due to his somnambulism (somncogoism?).

Em 1966 a GM lan�a o projeto do primeiro carro brasileiro com a marca Chevrolet, "OPALA". O nome � dado pela fus�o de dois produtos da GM no exterior (Opel e Impala).

Ap�s dois anos de expectativa, o Chevrolet Opala � finalmente apresentado ao p�blico brasileiro, no Sal�o do Autom�vel em 1968, precisamente aos vinte dias do m�s de novembro. Ele chega em quatro vers�es, todos quatro portas - Opala com 4 e 6 cilindros e Opala De Luxo tamb�m 4 e 6 cilindros, todos excepcionalmente confort�veis para seis pessoas, bancos dianteiros inteiri�os, c�mbio de tr�s velocidades � frente com alavanca na coluna de dire��o, painel com poucos instrumentos, amplo porta malas e boa dirigibilidade.

No ano de 1971 surge o Opala cup�, n�o possu�a colunas laterais, o teto puxado para tr�s e perfil alongado, assim representava uma imagem mais esportiva, de carros compactos. Em seguida desapareceu a vers�o SS quatro portas, pois pelo aspecto esportivo era favor�vel sua apresenta��o em duas portas.

Como op��o permanente era oferecido dois tipos de caixa de mudan�as: Tr�s velocidades e alavanca na dire��o, ou quatro velocidades e alavanca no assoalho, onde a segunda op��o oferecia maior agilidade, economia de combust�vel e melhor desempenho, especialmente para os modelos quatro cilindros.

Foi em 1973 que toda linha Opala sofre as primeiras modifica��es. A que obteve maior resultado foi a da mec�nica do 4 cilindros: aumentou-se o di�metro dos cilindros e reduziu o curso dos pist�es. Esse motor recebeu o nome de 151 e apesar da pequena altera��o da cilindrada (2474cc), houve um consider�vel aumento de pot�ncia. Tamb�m foi introduzido o sistema de transmiss�o autom�tica, sendo opcional para 6 cilindros, e em 1974 se estendia para os ve�culos 4 cilindros.

Somente em 1975, o Chevrolet Opala sofre a maior modifica��o no seu estilo, foram redesenhadas as partes traseiras e dianteiras. O cap� recebeu um ressalto central e, para maior seguran�a, redondos encaixavam-se em molduras quadradas; as lanternas dianteiras foram instaladas na ponta dos p�ra-lamas; a grade dianteira, pintada em preto fosco, agora apresentava dois frisos horizontais. Instalados na parte traseira, quatro lanternas redondas, as duas internas funcionavam apenas como refletores e seu centro branco como luz de r�. A parte interior tamb�m sofreu modifica��es estil�sticas.

A Fam�lia continuava a crescer: a perua Caravan chegava ao mercado em 1975. Um projeto iniciado em 1971, apresentado em uma �nica vers�o 4 cilindros, a perua Caravan, podia receber opcionais como motor 6 cilindros, transmiss�o autom�tica, c�mbio tr�s ou quatro marchas, dire��o hidr�ulica ou outros, � escolha do comprador. Lan�ou-se simultaneamente, nas vers�es cup� e quatro portas, o Chevrolet Comodoro que substituiria o Gran Luxo. Intitulado como o carro de maior status da linha, normalmente vinha equipado com motor 6 cilindros de 4.100cc, 184 cv de pot�ncia e 4000rpm, carburador de duplo corpo, transmiss�o manual de quatro marchas (ou autom�tica) e dire��o hidr�ulica.

A GMB lan�ou um carro especial: O cup� 250S, um carro com maior desempenho que satisfez os compradores de modelos esportivos. Sua maior diferen�a era a prepara��o efetuada no motor de 6 cilindros, que tinha a rela��o de compress�o aumentada para 8,0:1, comando de v�lvulas trabalhado e carbura��o dupla. A pot�ncia passou a ser de 153 cv, superior a antiga, desse modo o Opala 250S obtinha a acelera��o de 0 a 100Km/h em apenas 10s.

Surgi o Opala em vers�o b�sica em duas ou quatro portas de motor 4 cilindros, substituindo os modelos Especial e De Luxo que saia do mercado. O modelo b�sico estava preparado para aceitar transforma��es com diferentes opcionais: motor de seis cilindros ou 250S; c�mbio de tr�s ou quatro marchas, manual ou autom�tico; e dire��o hidr�ulica entre outras modifica��es. Assim a partir de um modelo b�sico era poss�vel obter qualquer modelo da linha, desde o antigo Especial at� o modelo Comodoro.

Em 1975 os ve�culos foram equipados ainda com freio a disco nas rodas dianteiras, duplo circuito hidr�ulico, c�mbio de tr�s velocidades na coluna da dire��o e barra estabilizadora traseira. A mec�nica era encontrada em quatro vers�es: Motor 151b�sico (4 cilindros, 2474 cc e 90cv); Motor 151 S (4 cilindros, 2474 cc e 98 cv); 250 (6 cilindros, 4098 cc e 148 cv) e 250 S (6 cilindros, 4098 cc e 153 cv).

Manteve-se a produ��o da linha esportiva mais simples - SS 4 cilindros com motor 151S e SS 6 cilindros com mec�nica opcional do 250S, lan�ado em 1976 para se eternizar na mente dos apaixonados.

Em 1978, apesar de poucas mudan�as na linha, a Caravan tamb�m ganhou sua vers�o SS.
Em 1980 � lan�ado o Diplomata, top de linha, que contava entre outros com dire��o servo-assistida e condicionador de ar, como item de s�rie. O Diplomata conquista prefer�ncia executiva para aqueles que procuravam total conforto sobre rodas.
No ano de 1981, a linha sofre modifica��es interiores - volante inovado e painel mais atual. Em seguida lan�a-se a s�rie Silver Star. No ano de 1983 o c�mbio de 5 marchas entra no mercado.

As modifica��es ganham maior impacto deixando o Diplomata com aspecto mais agressivo - 1985. A est�tica externa do Diplomata ganha largas molduras laterais e far�is auxiliares de longo alcance. Internamente, instrumentos com novo designer e a evolu��o el�trica para controles dos vidros e retrovisores.

A nova frente, com far�is trapezoidais e lanternas traseiras por toda a largura do ve�culo � introduzido nos modelos fabricados em 1988, por dentro o volante de tr�s raios escamote�vel em sete posi��es e opcionais in�ditos com alarme sonoro para lanternas e far�is quando ligados, controle temporizado dos far�is e luz interna, vidros el�tricos com temporizador e ar condicionado com extens�o para o banco traseiro (Para o Diplomata SE estes itens eram de s�rie).

O potente motor 250S a gasolina, somente era oferecido sob encomenda e foi substitu�do por um modelo alem�o, c�mbio autom�tico de quatro marchas e bloqueio do conversor de torque. A fabrica��o do fen�meno da industria automobil�stica � encerrada. O �ltimo Opala � fabricado, no dia 16 de abril de 1992, saindo de linha a mais poderosa produ��o de conforto, durabilidade e pot�ncia, motivo evidente que deixa at� hoje milhares de admiradores, que mesmo ap�s 13 anos o consideram "O Imbat�vel".

Leaked C&D Issue Spills the Beans on Brand New Porsche 911


The wall of secrecy surrounding the brand-new 2012 Porsche 911 has cracked thanks to a forum member of Teamspeed who downloaded and shared Car & Driver’s upcoming August issue in which the magazine has an exclusive first ride of the car. C&D joined the Porsche team during the new 911’s final tests in South Africa nd here’s what they found out.
The new 911 is code-named 991 and will be launched in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared to the 997 that it replaces, it is 2.5 inches longer and has a 4.0-inch longer wheelbase so that it can accommodate a hybrid system, presumably from the Panamera.

695 Tributo Ferrari Headlines Abarth’s Line-Up in Goodwood


Abarth is marking its return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the second year in a row with the 500-based 695 Tributo Ferrari. A 1.388 cc turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering 180 PS at 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm powers the spirited city car with the Ferrari badges.

Toyota Sports Up Prius with new PLUS Package from TRD


At last year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Toyota displayed a lightly modified version of the Prius Hybrid to inaugurate its new line of accessories under the PLUS moniker.
Now it’s time for the Japanese automaker to release the production version of its modestly sported up Prius with the commercial launch of the PLUS Performance Package that will be available for order in July in limited numbers.
The package features styling and performance upgrades, and is optionally available on all Prius models with pricing set at $3,699 for the Prius Two, Three, and Four trim levels and $2,999 for the Prius Five.

2011 Nissan 370ZPros:

Great improvement over the successful 350Z
Nice body lines, Rays wheels are icing on the cake
Powerful motor with great sound
GTR influence

Cons:

Manual transmission not as slick as the competition
No lumbar support or telescoping steering wheel
Either less weight or more power and this could be an exotic challenger for a fraction of the cost

41 years ago Nissan (Datsun in the US) launched the 240Z onto our shores and turned the sports car market on its head. Here was a light, nimble, reliable, value oriented sports coupe for two which had decent cargo capacity. I had the pleasure of owning and wrenching on various Z cars through the 300ZX and still found the 240Z to be the purist of them all. Only when Nissan introduced the 350Z in 2003 did it appear that they had something of real value that could match their original Z sports car.

Just like the Porsche 911, Nissan has raised the level of performance and comfort through the years while paying tribute to its Spartan roots. Sure Porsche got a big head start (approximately 6 years), but Nissan has paid close attention to the formula which Porsche, and Chevrolet with the Corvette, have successfully followed through the years. Now the latest incarnation of the Z has brought this car very close to the level of its big brother GTR, but falls short in a few areas we will discuss later. Address these issues and keep the sticker under $40k, and except for some small back seats, the Z could overtake the GTR. Sound like the Cayman-911 argument? déjà-vu.

Design

From the early days of the 240-Z through the 300ZX years, Z cars were influenced by everything from the likes of Jaguar, Chevrolet, Ferrari and even Lotus; a Japanese version of these cars if you will. With the 350Z, Nissan took its La Jolla California design studio concept and brought it to production, and it was an instant hit. This sixth generation 370Z has improved the concept further by building out the fender flares and sharing design cues from the GTR, which share the same E platform as the current Infiniti G Coupe, FX, and Renault Alpine. It’s wider than the 350Z (read grip), and shorter than the previous Z (read quicker turning.)

The exterior fender flares results in a menacing look without being portrayed as a silly phallic symbol. When traffic approaches from the rear side, eyes will be pinned on the fenders and the beautiful Rays wheels our test car was equipped with. From all angles, the Z looks like it means business. The front bumper has GTR influences and also looks equally menacing on approach, so much so that mothers with small children quickly gathered the tykes as we rolled down neighborhood streets. It makes a statement like no other car with an under $30k base price. Our test car had an unusual Black Cherry paint finish, but the 370Z really looks best in bright silver.

Drive Impressions
This is the truest version of the 370Z; the base car with the Sport Package ($3000), adding limited slip, 19” Rays Wheels, front and rear spoilers, and larger front brakes. Along with this comes a $580 add on for the matching Nismo brake pads. The finely tuned 3.7L engine makes 332 hp and launches the Z down the road with one of the best sounds from a V6 engine, powerful and smooth.  Acceleration is pretty fierce and the amount of grip with the 275’s out back is serious. We turned off the traction control and the Z felt planted in the twisties, with plenty of torque to pull it up the most aggressive mountain roads with ease.
We mentioned that the 370Z has a shorter wheelbase than the 350Z, resulting is a faster turning car, but with that you get more jounce in the ride, especially over rough surfaces. Luckily, Nissan did a great job tuning the non-sport mode suspension to be fairly compliant, saving our brains on long freeway drives.

The Z’s manual transmission is probably the weak point of the whole car, not the ratios but the long throws of the shifter and clutch. This becomes most apparent when trying to go fast. We loved the sport mode, which stiffened the suspension, created more top end power from the motor, and activated the SynchroRev Match®, but this still didn’t address the throws of the transmission. We would suggest a dual clutch semi automatic transmission similar to the GTR, as that will shift faster than 99% of the humans out there. The wheels and tires were great, but Nissan could probably widen them another inch and still clear the fenders.
Nissan is at a point where the 370Z is getting eerily close to the flagship GTR in performance and looks. In fact, the 370Z tends to be more noticeable due to its aggressive fenders, beautiful wheels, and low stance. If they added 90 hp to the motor and AWD, it would be an R8 or Gallardo contender for less than $45k. Nissan has the platform, but a 370Z set up this way might obviate the need to produce the Skyline, or at least to carry it in this country. Sorry GTR fans, but 600 lbs is 600 lbs.

Comfort and Convenience
Just like the exterior, the interior is all business; no navigation, no XM radio, no power seats, not even leather; all of this kept our test car below a 3300 pound curb weight. Just a simple black interior with gray accents, along with tasteful brushed aluminum weaved into the scheme. The gauges are a combination of analog and digital, and strike a balance that makes immediate sense to the uninitiated, with the center dash being the traditional clock, oil temp and volt meter. Interior fit and finish is very good and up to the level of Nissan’s best. Materials and appearance are great; they didn’t try to get all fancy, so everything looks like it belongs.
Although the seating is low and comfortable, the Z could accommodate more drivers with a telescoping wheel, manually adjustable seat bolsters and a lumbar support.
