Though we've offered supercharged packages for vehicles for several years, many enthusiasts longed for a turbo option because of the different driving characteristics offered with this type of force induction," said Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Autos. "The Shelby Turbo was created to fulfill that need."
To build it, Shelby teamed up with California-based Turbonetics for a turbocharger embossed with the Shelby name and Michigan-based Mustang Racing Technologies to create the kit. The result is an impressive 550 hp that's 50-state legal. The kit also includes Shelby's Baer brake system, Borla exhaust, a short-throw shifter, suspension upgrades, new wheels, a new hood and grille, and new interior pieces including a gauge pod, floor mats, and an official plaque.

Shelby took us for a ride in its first Turbo car at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and it's an impressive package. Careful engine calibration means there's essentially no turbo lag and the pull is strong all the way to red line. The suspension upgrades keep the car neutrally balanced through the turns with just a hint of oversteer if you're hard enough on the gas. It's not a full race suspension, though, so it's easily drivable on the street. While the turbo wails, the exhaust bellows, and the blow-off valve pops under hard driving, it's fairly quiet around town so you won't have to worry about waking the neighbors when you leave for work.
If you're looking for a different kind of upgrade for your '05 to '09 Mustang, the Shelby Turbo is a good option. Just make sure you have an extra $22,599 sitting around, 'cause speed ain't cheap.
